In this course, you'll learn how project teams can create unique value, how the structure and culture of organizations can impact how project teams are formed, managed, and complete work, and how a project manager’s approach can be tailored to best fit their organizational environment. You’ll also be introduced to a variety of project management methodologies, and learn how to choose the one that best fits your organization’s structure and objectives. Finally, you’ll see how project management processes can be sorted into process groups and knowledge areas, and how each of these processes can play a critical role in successfully managing your project team. By the end of this course, you’ll have the foundation necessary to begin a deeper dive into each of ten project management knowledge areas, which are the focus for the remainder of this learning path.

Hi everyone, my name is Casey Ayers and welcome to my course, Organizational Influences & Project Management Lifecycle.

This course is the second entry in our newly updated series helping you prepare for the latest version of the PMP exam, based on the sixth edition of the Project Management Body of Knowledge, better known as the PMBOK Guide. By completing this course, and others in our PMP prep series, you’ll not only be better prepared to ace the certification exam, but will also completely fulfill the mandatory training requirement that must be met before taking the exam.

In this second course in our PMP learning path, we’ll explore why organizations undertake projects, and how project management differs from the more common, day-to-day tasks of operational management. We’ll discover how organizational structure, cultural norms, and the nature of each project’s work can influence our selection of project management methodology, and the ability we have to build our project team. Then, we’ll learn how processes related to various project management knowledge areas can help us more effectively accomplish our goals, and gear up for more intensive discussion of each of these throughout the remainder of this course series.

By the end of this course, you’ll better understand how to tailor your approach to managing a project to your organization’s needs and your team’s composition.

This course – and others in the series – can not only help you learn more about project management and prepare for the PMP exam, but also serve as a great refresher for established project managers and as an opportunity to earn continuing education credit.

I hope you’ll join me for this course on Organizational Influences & the Project Management Lifecycle, here at Pluralsight.
